MOSES
"FLEETWOOD" WALKER
Moses
"Fleetwood" Walker was the first African-American to play major
league baseball. He did so with a Toledo, Ohio team 64 years before Jackie
Robinson broke baseball's "color barrier" in 1947. He was
an accomplished catcher who played without a glove. He was a man of rare
courage who overcame name calling, racial slurs, and outright hostility.
Walker also was an educated man who attended two colleges and studies a
wide range of subjects. Later in life, he published a newspaper and
invented an exploding artillery shell.
