FANNIE LOU
HAMER
Fannie Lou Hamer,
granddaughter of a slave and one of 20 brothers and sisters, rose to
become part of the conscience of America. Andrew Young called her a
"tireless humanitarian who shook the foundation of our
nation." She was a committed force behind the grassroots organization of the Southern Civil Rights movement of the
1960's. The focus of her work was in the field of voter
registration. The list of her accomplishments and awards is
virtually without end, including five doctoral degrees from various
colleges and universities.
